The Season of Giving Back
December 17, 2014
This time of year is always one of reflection for use, and as we look back to our humble beginnings in 1971, we feel very fortunate to be where we are now. Our success has largely been due to our philosophies and passions. We are very passionate about creating high quality products as well as our commitment to being a socially and environmentally conscious company. From green business practices to our decision to buy all of our materials as locally as we can, we are always looking for ways that we can make a positive impact. It's with that in mind that we begin to look towards the future on how we can give back on a global level.
Creating Global Change
We are very excited to be working with 1% For Women, a local organization committed to creating global change by raising awareness about the importance of supporting women in agriculture and providing financial assistance through microcredit loans around the world.
In 2015, we are committed to using 1% of our net profits to provide financial assistance, through Kiva.org, funding microcredit loans to women around the world seeking to better their lives, heal their communities and the land, and ensure that their children are well educated, nourished and understand what it means to create a better tomorrow for us all.
As a small family owned business, we understand the desire to follow your passion but know the importance of having the needed capital to turn your dreams into reality. We hope to be able to help others pursue their dreams as we have been fortunate enough to do.
Meet Regina from Kenya - Our First Loan!
Before the New Year, we had the honor of providing a microcredit loan to Regina, a 50-year old dairy farmer from the outskirts of Kapsowar, Kenya.
Julie Pech, owner of The Chocolate Therapist, All-Natural Chocolate and Gourmet Coffee and author of The Chocolate Therapist, A User's Guide to the Extraordinary Health Benefits of Chocolate, has married her passion of nutrition with her passion for making natural, preservative-free chocolates that have many health benefits.

I have always felt a special connection with the cultures and philosophies of Native Americans. Perhaps it has something to do with the connection with nature, embodied by this beautiful blessing. While the blessing is said to be an ancient Apache blessing, it actually appeared in the 1947 Novel Blood Brothers and later in the movie Broken Arrow. Despite conflicting opinions of the exact origin of the poem, I still think it is beautiful.
Coming up this weekend we will be exhibiting at the Colorado Indian Market in Denver. The Indian Market is an impressive showcase of art and culture with lots of Native American and western themed artists and vendors, as well as fun activities and fantastic entertainment, including many different traditional dances. It is fun for the whole family.
We have the perfect Valentine's Day chocolates and gift sets at Sundance & Friends for that special someone in your life! Everything from dark chocolate to milk chocolate and sea salt savories, we meet all your chocolate needs. The chocolates are hand-crafted by The Chocolate Therapist from Littleton, Colorado.

Spring has sprung in Buena Vista, well, at least for now! We have Spring fever and I bet you do to. We are looking forward to switching gears and preparing for outdoor spring activities in Chaffee County. Of course, we can;t wait for Mother Nature to grace us with her magnificent colors but, in the meantime, below we have chosen our top Spring activities to do in our beautiful area.
1. Whitewater Rafting the Arkansas River
Now that Brown's Canyon is a National Monument, our area is anticipating a jump in tourism. Our beloved Arkansas River is home to various class rapids and adventurer's alike. We like to stay within our comfort zone so Brown's Canyon is our first choice in whitewater rafting for our area.
2. Mountain Biking
When we have mild winters, such as the one we are currently experiencing, mountain biking can typically be done year round in our area. However, we look forward to getting up in the mountains when the snow starts to melt. We have hundreds of trails suitable for different levels. Our favorite trails include the Colorado Trail and Monarch Crest Trail
3. Natural Hot Springs
Of course, you can frequent hot springs throughout the year but we look forward to making a day of it at Mount Princeton Hot Springs in Nathrop, CO as the weather gets warmer. When the air is a bit crisp and the sun bright, we love soaking in Chalk Creek absorbing the rich minerals our sweet Mother Earth releases to us.
2014 Winter Solstice & New Moon
December 21, 2014
Today marks the 2014 WINTER SOLSTICE in conjunction with the last FULL MOON IN CAPRICORN of the year. The winter solstice occurs when the sun enters the sign of the Capricorn and is considered the shortest day of the year. The sun appears at it southernmost point in its path around the sky. At this time the sun has the least amount of distance to travel from horizon to horizon, which is why it's a shorter day.
Now is the time to begin your story and intentions for 2015 by coming together as a community to unite our intentions and create more LIGHT onto Earth. Try not to let false intentions hold you back, stay grounded and follow your heart.
We are extremely grateful for this community and look forward to working our intentions with you in the new year!

My Coffee Cup
& Organic Papua New Guinea Coffee
From the Buena Vista Roastery
I love everything about my coffee cup - the clean lines, the way it feels in my hand, the imperfection of the earth tone glazes. I love the chips and cracks.
To me it is more than a coffee cup - it's about taking a moment from my day to pause, to slow down. It's about ritual.
It holds my morning coffee, but it holds so much more - it holds memories and promise, laughter and tears, perfection & flaws.
Still have some shopping to do? Don't fret! We've got lots of great gifts ideas. There's a little bit of something for everyone here at Sundance and Friends.
Finding the "right" gift for the lady in your life can be one of the most challenging parts of the season. That's why this week we've selected a few of our favorites for the ladies.
Christmas is almost here!
"There's a revolution that needs to happen and it starts from inside each one of us. We need to wake up and fall in love with Earth. Our love and admiration for the Earth has the power to unite us and remove all boundaries, separation and discrimination. We need to re-establish true communication–true communion–with ourselves, with the Earth, and with one another as children of the same mother." ~Thich Nhat Hanh

New Year Celebrations
In & Around Buena Vista!
December 30, 2014
Wow! It's hard to believe that 2014 is nearing an end while 2015 is upon us. With the hectic holiday season behind us, the big question is...what is there to do for New Years in and around Buena Vista? Our small but mighty mountain town has something for everyone of all ages! We have outlined our favorite things to do on New Years Eve and New Years Day.
Know someone who loves wine? Check out this piece which enables you to display wine in a really cool way. Made a Buena Vista local, Ed Eberle, these wooden displays use the weight of the wine--empty or full--to hold itself upright.
The Colorado Moccasin is our most popular for a reason. Simple, made with only American made materials these slippers are the way to go! Each pair is handcrafted in Guffey, Colorado, which means that no two are the same. She'll appreciate her warm feet and the fact each pair is handmade for sure!
Happy Earth Day!

Eco-Chic Fashion for Globally Conscious Women
January 16, 2015
To me, my coffee cup embodies the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi - "the art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature, of accepting the natural cycle of growth, decay and death. It's simple, slow, and uncluttered - and it reveres authenticity above all."
This time of year especially - with the passing of the winter solstice, the short days and the coming of the new year, I celebrate the cycles of the earth - the quite dark days of winter, the return of the sun. I remind myself of the importance of celebrating the darkness before welcoming the light.
Some of our most manly and utilitarian gifts include the Flurry boot, Buffalo Billfold wallets, and Johnathon Baliey's belt buckles.
The Flurry boot is one of Sundance's best. Easy to slip on and with a sturdy sole these boots are perfect for stepping out for the mail or spending the day outside--just about anything really. Not to mention they're lined with incredibly comfy and warm sheepskin!
Each Buffalo Billfold is handcrafted in Minnesota out of genuine American bison hide. Many years of experience and the best craftsmenship make these wallets a quality gift.
Johnathon Bailey has got something really special going on with these belt buckles. Each one is handcarved then cast in bronze. That's a lot of work! After each piece is cast a stone is inlaid--the two shown here feature botryoidal hematite (grey/black) and carnelian (red).
A fresh snowfall has gotten us excited for cozy nights by the fire with our sheepskin slippers, hot chocolate, and the upcoming holidays of course!
We know that the holiday season can be a bit stressful when trying to find that perfect gift. That's why we've created a holiday gift guide! Check back each week to see some of our best pieces for the guy, gal, or little one in your life.
As with all of the handcrafted products that we carry at Sundance & Friends, we are extremely conscious about where they are made, how they are made and who is making them. The Sundance family is committed to doing what we can to help the environment. We realize that the shoe industry is not the most environmentally friendly industry, but here are a few things that we are doing to help make a difference:
*We have eliminated the toluene based adhesives from our product lines and have gone to a natural rubber based glue with stitched on techniques. Healthier for us and for the environment.
*We buy only US materials tanned locally, thus eliminating the huge amounts of oil required to ship materials from China and other parts of the world and reducing the “carbon footprint” of producing our products.
*The US tanneries that we use are subject to much higher environmental standards than their foreign competitors.
*We re-use cardboard boxes for all of our shipping and recycle anything we can.
*We ship all orders using UPS Carbon Neutral shipping to offset the environmental impacts of shipping.
*All of the Sundance Family lives within walking distance of our workshop and/or store!
*Our workshop is a highly efficient, passive solar design with wood heat.
*We are looking into the feasibility of installing an active solar and wind powered electric system to power our workshop - we’ll keep you posted on the progress.
*Our retail store in Buena Vista is partially powered by a full PV solar array on our roof - taking advantage of the sunny Colorado days!
*Creating products from sheepskin is using an otherwise wasted byproduct of the wool and lamb industry. Sheep are not raised solely for their skins.
*We are always looking for new ways to improve our practices and reduce our impact on our Mother Earth.
So, put on your warm fuzzy Sundance Sheepskin Slippers and turn down the thermostat!
